A Deal A Week

“Why I think Fred Wilson is a maniac and other things I learned by attending his Production Academy”

By Kelly Aluise

First of all I Fred Wilson is in no way an insane person so when I say maniac I am referring to the American Heritage Dictionary’s 2nd definition of the word …

“A person who has an excessive enthusiasm or desire for something i.e.; a sports maniac.”

Here is a list of ways in which I think Fred is a maniac…

1. Fred is a lead generating maniac. He utilizes every moment that he has set aside for prospecting to actually prospect.

2. He is a delegating maniac. He doesn’t do anything except prospect – Aka- lead generating and follow up. His two lovely assistants do all the rest of the stuff that needs to get done.

3. Fred is a maniac at being focused. He doesn’t get side-tracked into long conversations that aren’t about real estate. He stays in the hunt and constantly asks himself “Where is the deal in this?”

4. Fred is a listening maniac – he listened way more than he speaks and he was really patient with everybody.

5. Fred is a maniac at being the “Captain of his own ship kinda guy”. He sets the agenda for what’s going to happen next. For example; instead of asking this guy who he was on the phone with if the guy would like to set up a meeting with him, he just skipped to “So Dan, what time would be good for you tomorrow?” And BAM! He had an appointment. Another example of the same concept was when he was speaking to a prospect about potentially buying this property he didn’t ask him if he wanted to go drive by the house, he just said “When you go you’ll see what I mean” and suddenly the guy is promising Fred that he would drive by the property the next day.

6. Fred is a matchmaking maniac. He connects people to properties the way that a matchmaker connects two people for marriage.

7. Fred is a question asking maniac. He keeps the conversation moving in a forward motion by asking lots of questions.

8. Fred is a doing business in the NOW maniac. He is just brilliant at asking lots of questions to get to the truth about which people are going to do business now. He is so committed to the “A Deal a Week” model that I feel like he attracts people that are willing to do business in the next seven days.

What I realized about myself.

I would totally say that I realized that I’m a big, fat loser but then everybody would get on my case about being so negative and how terrible it is to say things like that about yourself and about how not to send that kind of message out into the universe, words have power blah, blah, blah. So, I’m not even going to mention it. Even though I just did. Whatever.

What I realized is that I give up too easily. A few months ago I tried out the Propportunity idea. I really had a great property to talk about and did talk about it for TWO WHOLE DAYS and when I didn’t get the results that I wanted I stopped.

I realized that I’m results oriented instead of process oriented. I’m struggling with this idea of being in the process because I want instant gratification. I want success YESTERDAY.

I’ve always been proud that I’m a really hard worker and now I realize that although there isn’t anything wrong with being a hard worker it isn’t necessarily the best approach. So now, my goal is to work smarter.

And lastly I realized that nothing that Fred does is very hard to do. He isn’t doing anything that I can’t easily do. And I mean EASILY. He just connects the dots like a little kid would do on the kids menu at a restaurant but he’s doing it with people and properties. It’s the fact that he’s doing it is which is extraordinary. He isn’t questioning himself or his actions he just takes the next step. He doesn’t have any emotion attached to any of it. He just dials, talks, drives, talks, eats, talks and it all flows beautifully. I feel totally inspired and can’t wait to monkey around with all the new ideas I learned from Fred. My plan is to prospect 3 hours a day 5 days a week, memorize the rest of the scripts and dialogues a little bit everyday and focus on being a matchmaker in the hopes that my production will dramatically increase. I mean less face it, it can’t get much worse!

Kelly,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Fred....a great boost of energy to start the day!

FREDIAN THEORY....

Commitment is measured by action.

Who will do what.... when?

Are you talking to people in terms of benefit (opportunity)?

Enlightenment is being free of self-limitation.

"I like to find out what people think."

You don't vend a propportunity™ to sell that specific property, although that is a possibility. You vend opportunity to find out what people will do.

Every day you need to watch from falling into the trap of thinking, "Tomorrow things will work out."

Measure your success by what you do today.

One definition of success is... taking appropriate action.

The goal is to find out what you don't know vs. judging what you think you know. This is what it means to be "open".

Things don't get done because they don't get done today.

Great is being great today.

Your career, your year, won't come together until you break it down into the unit of today.

What are you pushing away, distraction or deals?

The practice of being in the hunt leads to production on a regular basis.

Begin each day "on purpose". Clear, connected, open, and READI.

Your decisions define who you are.

Fred Wilson
